To put a stop to coveting is to "head other sins off at the pass.". Impossible to serve two masters! It will create a lot of envy and a lot of provocation. Not striving. "You've been called unto liberty." And that's why Paul was persecuted by the Jews, because he was saying, "The law of Moses is not necessary for righteousness or for salvation. But for us now the apostle carefully adds the principle of our heavenly character. There can be no compromise; but to be exclusive in any sense save as the expression of the truth in Christ would be in its own way an utter and heartless falsehood. For God does speak elsewhere, and even on this occasion, of a numerous seed. This is what the law commands, but those who want to put themselves under the law cannot do it. Can I be righteous by keeping the law? (Compare John 1:9; John 1:17.). They have not yet obtained a complete victory over it; they have still flesh as well as Spirit in them, and that has its affections and lusts, which continue to give them no little disturbance, but as it does not now reign in their mortal bodies, so as that they obey it in the lusts thereof (Romans 6:12), so they are seeking the utter ruin and destruction of it, and to put it to the same shameful and ignominious, though lingering death, which our Lord Jesus underwent for our sakes. He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" "Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?" The legal mischief had emanated from Jerusalem: the remedy of grace must be applied by the apostles, elders, and brethren there. I would [wish that] they were even cut off which trouble you ( Galatians 5:12 ). Therefore, it came to pass that there was nothing the apostle had not learned of which they boasted. An undue regard to the approbation and applause of men is one great ground of the unhappy strifes and contentions that exist among Christians. Therefore, no wonder that he says, "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ.". And then they started to rail on me and prophesy my death and things of this nature. If you want to be a subject in God's kingdom, then you cannot do these things. II. "Ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.". This is not a word which classical Greek uses commonly. So were the others that seemed to be the chief. Their lives should demonstrate the truth that their sinful nature has been crucified with Christ and has no further power over them. He refuses all cover for different thoughts. But it is not so. The enemy had ensnared them by crying up circumcision, in order to betray them into a link with Judaism; but they had no thought of bearing the real burden of the law. Paul says, "If you go on in this way, of which circumcision is the beginning, you might as well end up by castrating yourselves like these heathen priests." According to the prince of the power of the air, among whom we all had our manner of living. Nothing more in keeping with the wants of those addressed, who had so soon turned aside from the grace of Christ to a different gospel. Everybody knows this. It is the liberty not to do those things which the flesh once forced me to do. Concerning these things, or those in whom these fruits of the Spirit are found, the apostle says, There is no law against them, to condemn and punish them. consequences of a contrary spirit and conduct. I say something that is not of the Lord. After all their vapouring about the law, they were biting and devouring one another. Men were not his source, nor was man even a medium to him. The promise has another and most blessed place. He wouldn't bother correcting me. Nor this only. (4) Coveting is a sin which best illustrates Paul's statement, "I would not have come to know sin except through the Law" (verse 7). Glory, the glory of man is indeed empty; it's vain. When a Gentile Christian, mark, takes up such Old Testament elements, according to the Holy Ghost, it is not to him merely Judaism, but a return to his Gentile idols, little as he may think so. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing ( Galatians 5:2 ). Have ye suffered so many things in vain, if it be yet in vain? Love finds its activity in caring for those that are cast down, "and so fulfils the law of Christ." It supposed, and went forth to every creature on the ground of the total ruin of Jew and Gentile. Galatians 5 - Standing Fast In the Liberty of Jesus A. 15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. Or literally, "I wish they were castrated who trouble you. He habitually measured things not so much by their bearing on Jews or Gentiles as by their effect on Christ's glory. His account proves how independent he was of the very persons whom they would have desired to have seen associated with him. Now. "Stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage." (Galatians 5:1) "You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For these two women stand for two covenants. No, this persuasion doesn't come from Him who called you. He is baptized into Christ's death, which is the sole means of deliverance out of his state of sin. The law forbids these things, but the law of love also forbids them. He mentions another fact, and of the greatest gravity, closing this part of his argument that when Peter subsequently came down into the Gentile quarters, he had been himself affected by the subtle spirit of Judaism, i.e., the chief of the twelve! He wants to get rid of the first Adam and all its appliances, not to keep it on; and therefore he puts on Christ. Thus He lived and moved here below. Love; the New Testament word for love is agape ( G26) . Strong expressions of partisan hatred exerting itself for mutual injury. "Ye which are spiritual restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted." If, instead of acting like men and Christians, they would behave themselves more like brute beasts, in tearing and rending one another, they could expect nothing as the consequence of it, but that they would be consumed one of another; and therefore they had the greatest reason not to indulge themselves in such quarrels and animosities. . By the Spirit of God, we're waiting for that hope of righteousness through faith. Accordingly, in Galatians 3:1-29 he pursues his reasoning. He heartily avows what they counted a defect; and not Only so, but with the greatest solemnity assures them that he had not seen the apostles, save only Peter, and James the brother of the Lord, and these but for a short space. "As many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." The cross paid it all. On the contrary, they must think of others and act to please them. This is all that people's zeal and labour come to. provoking one another, envying one another ( Galatians 5:26 ). But now I have liberty in Christ Jesus, for I don't have to follow after the flesh anymore. "Paul, an apostle, not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ and," in order to make it still more evident, "by God the Father, who raised him from the dead." Nor this only. . It doesn't really matter, I'm going to walk after the Spirit and I'm going to please God in this. There was no question of revealing His Son in them then. "I am crucified with Christ." It is a grim illustration at which a polite society raises its eyebrows, but it would be intensely real to the Galatians who knew all about the priests of Cybele. Leave room for God, and for God alone. I wish we could always remember, when the devil tempts us to disputes, that the disagreement of members within the church can lead to nothing else than the ruin and consumption of the whole body. What Paul is saying is, "This legalistic movement may not have gone very far yet, but you must root it out before it destroys your whole religion.". These words are used by him emphatically; for he did not merely say Bite, which denotes an angry person, but likewise, Devour, which denotes one who persists in wickedness. You were running well. Was this the love the law claimed? Galatians 5:16. Heathenism! Thus he accepts the challenge that was given by unbelief. That's all the law is saying to you. And how true all this is! I began to think it through and I thought, "Yes, it is a work of the flesh, because usually a person gets into heresy to attract attention to himself." It was something painful to bear. "We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we may be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." Only we must carefully bear this in mind, that in the epistle to the Galatians we never rise exactly to church ground. "The things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not. Christian freedom is not licence, for the simple but tremendous reason that the Christian is not a man who has become free to sin, but a man, who, by the grace of God, has become free not to sin. All rights reserved. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us [all?]. It is a lovely word. "If you keep the whole law yet offended in one point, you're guilty of all. You are bound to carry it out consistently. Had a man come down from the teaching of the twelve, albeit inspired of God to write, as we know some of them were, and all of them having a most truly apostolic place, he might have been startled by the teaching of St. Paul. At first he prayed the Lord to take it from him; but no! We are crucified unto it by grace, as the world is crucified unto us by judgment. Their main support then, as they thought Abraham, had two sons; but they stood, according to Scripture, on wholly different principles. But spite of, or rather because of, their use of law, they were self-important, without holy power, and judged instead of loving each other. Be led by the Spirit, you're not under the law. If any apostleship would have served for the Gentiles, it ought to have been Paul's then; for Paul was the apostle of the uncircumcision. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith ( Galatians 5:5 ). "Bite" refers to the sudden action brought on by uncontrolled emotions that hurt other members of the church. This kind of love is a trusting love. Some are sins against the first and second commandments, as idolatry and witchcraft. Just as he had shown that God in His love to man had given the promise direct, so the apostle Paul acts in his care for the saints of God where all the foundations were endangered. Not so; it is exclusively of grace by Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be. They think that it is quite right, for the church especially, to appoint days for this and that saint; to have certain seasons to remind one of the Lord's incarnation, ministry, and crucifixion, of His resurrection, ascension, and so on. Another thing, too, let me just point out in passing. The apostle specifies the works of the flesh, which must be watched against and mortified, and the fruits of the Spirit, which must be cherished and brought forth (Galatians 5:19; Galatians 5:19, c.) and by specifying particulars he further illustrates what he is here upon. Here they might flatter themselves were plain tangible facts; here the amplest testimony on the Lord's part that the twelve are really His chosen apostles. They are ideas that have been planted in your mind by men. "Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are." That is not what Christian liberty is about. Hence the effect of the law in all its ramifications on man is the same. He will gain transgression thereby; nothing more, nothing better. Not to the place of being ridiculous. With the utmost simplicity he shows that his own separation from man was a part of God's ways for the purpose of making more strikingly felt the great truth that he was afterwards to proclaim. For God would not fellowship with man dominated by his flesh. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and joy and peace. To impugn the one is to imperil the other. And how the Holy Spirit had come upon those of the house of Cornelius who had known nothing really of obedience to the law. This shows us the exceeding seriousness of a step apparently so trifling as his abstaining from further intercourse with the Gentiles in mere ordinary life. Galatians 5:15 by Grant Richison | Apr 11, 2000 | Galatians | 1 comment Read Introduction to Galatians "But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!" They were only, as they supposed, beginning to cherish a becoming attitude toward the religion of the fathers, and of all who had before Christ honoured God on earth. Nothing that God afterwards introduced annulled this. What are you talking about?" But there was no sense of union then. Vincent Taylor once said, "The test of a good theologian is, can he write a tract?" In Galatians 5:1-15, the apostle Paul discusses the nature of Christian freedom, beginning with an admonition to "stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage" (Galatians 5:1, NKJV).Paul contends that Jesus Christ came to set believers free from a burdensome, legalistic existence as slaves to the law. The word used here ( dakno), means, properly, to bite, to sting; and here seems to be used in the sense of contending and striving - a metaphor probably taken from dogs and wild beasts. In our dealings with our fellow men we must reproduce this loving, forbearing, forgiving, patient attitude of God towards ourselves. If your navigational instruments are one degree off, and you take your heading and you start for Hawaii, by the time you've gone that distance, you'll miss Hawaii by two hundred and forty miles.Oh, by the time you get to Santa Barbara, you won't even notice anything. There followed Paul teachers, Judaizers who brought another gospel, which was not really a gospel. It is not merely to seek in love a fallen brother, but to be the succourer of others in their difficulties. Up to the destruction of Jerusalem it was law; but now, under Christianity, Jerusalem, being rebellious and scorning promise like Ishmael, is cast out and has nothing. The liberty that we have is not to do the things of the flesh. I have not. Indeed, we may say that now he thunders on the Galatians that were dragging in the law. Paul takes that old story and allegorises it. He is occupied with himself. These things are not allowed in the kingdom of God. If I preach circumcision, then why would they keep persecuting me? For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love ( Galatians 5:6 ). Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary 5:13-15 The gospel is a doctrine according to godliness, 1Ti 6:3, and is so far from giving the least countenance to sin, that it lays us under the strongest obligation to avoid and subdue it. So here the Christian puts on Christ, not the law or circumcision. another; She is as one that has no husband. And this comes up every day in many situations, and I have actually the choice in this situation. The law was given them with all pomp and solemnity. Accordingly the duty here recommended to us is that we set ourselves to act under the guidance and influence of the blessed Spirit, and agreeably to the motions and tendency of the new nature in us; and, if this be our care in the ordinary course and tenour of our lives, we may depend upon it that, though we may not be freed from the stirrings and oppositions of our corrupt nature, we shall be kept from fulfilling it in the lusts thereof; so that though it remain in us, yet it shall not obtain a dominion over us. The context behind the Galatians church We have been crucified to the requirements of the law Kill our desire or need to keep the law as a means of gaining justification Galatians 2:15-16 Being crucified to self Matthew 16:24 There is only one throne in our hearts and life, and only one person can sit on it Galatians 5:24 Trench says that Jesus showed agathosune ( G19) when he cleansed the Temple and drove out those who were making it a bazaar; but he showed chrestotes ( G5544) when he was kind to the sinning woman who anointed his feet. Peter would have been horrified at such a conclusion. They thought that Christianity would be all the better for adopting the ancient forms and beautiful figures of the law. And, doubtless, God had all this in view when He pledged Himself with an oath to Abraham. Meanwhile another and a better sort of blessing is given, as a better Seed also is given the true Heir of all the promises of God, even Christ the Lord. And it is in the realm of the spirit where man meets God. Mark it well. The apostle states it with perfect calmness, and without comparing others. He had made as much proficiency as any of his day it may be, more. To Paul all that mattered was faith which works through love. What comforts the soul, what strengthens and keeps it up, is that He "loved me, and gave Himself for me.". 7) Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Then we come to the closing chapter (Galatians 6:1-18); and here we find the Spirit of God calling for tenderness in dealing with those who are overtaken in a fault. Far too short a time, if it were a question of due initiation into the testimony of the twelve. Under law all is lost; under grace all is saved. You got to be circumcised." And God held the reins that the truth might be kept unsullied and pure; and he goes south and north as the Lord guided His servant, but not to Jerusalem to those that were apostles before him. What is good fruit in the Bible? Hence the point is not at all whether we have intrinsic power, but whether He is not now abiding in us as "a Spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." It had nothing whatever to do even with the Lord Himself, in the days of His flesh, when acting as minister of the circumcision in the land of Judea. This then is the apostle's allusion and reasoning; but he proceeds to meet a natural objection. "If righteousness come by the law," (he does not merely say, "come of the law," but come by it,) "then Christ is dead [died] in vain." If he had preached the full truth of the gospel, he insists that they had received it. and circumcision, and the necessity thereof to justification and IF YOU RECEIVE CIRCUMCISION. And I'm washed and I'm cleansed and I go on. And what is this? The apostle turns this into an admirable piece of divine reasoning in defence of the gospel. Others are sins against our neighbour, and contrary to the royal law of brotherly love, such as hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, which too often occasion seditions, heresies, envyings, and sometimes break out into murders, not only of the names and reputation, but even of the very lives, of our fellow-creatures. beasts of prey falling upon and devouring one another: for wolves It was exactly what Christ was on earth; and the expression of Christ is the prime call of the Christian. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do." God promises the final power and glory of Israel in the earth, putting down their foes, and so forth. And your spirit being alive, again you can experience fellowship with God, the joy, the blessing of fellowshipping with God.So, "walk in the Spirit." When God speaks of the seed numerous as the sand or the stars, He gives them a Jewish character of blessing. "Yet not I, but Christ liveth in me." The Christian's faith is founded not on a book but on a person; its dynamic is not obedience to any law but love to Jesus Christ. Further, it is laid down, if there had been a law capable of giving life, righteousness would be by the law. He said. That is to say, the covenant that was made between God and Abraham had reference to the seed which was coming, symbolized by Isaac, but really looking onward to Christ. Even when he has been scaling the highest heights of thought he always ends a letter on a practical note. It was from and in connection with Christ in heaven. having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Saints they may have been; and such, we know, moved about from Jerusalem. And we can all see how exactly the phrase falls in with the words of our Lord given in the Acts of the Apostles; for the wonderful truth burst upon the apostle's ear from the beginning, in the Saviour's call to him from heaven. And so, I would listen to these fellows, and I listened, you know, and just said, "Well, you know, that's what the scripture says, you know," when they would quote scriptures. And no wonder. So "cursed is the man that continues not in the whole law to do that which is written therein" ( Galatians 3:10 ). How impossible, therefore, to add the law to the promise! 2 Mark my words! self-seeking, dissension, heretical division, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and all that is like these things, I warn you, as I have warned you before, that those who do things like that will not inherit the Kingdom of God. It was not to keep people under the law, still less could it be to put any under the law, but to bring them clean out if they had been under it before. Flesh alas! You see, if I weren't a child of God, He would just let me go. "The scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. Their predicament would only become worse, as evidenced by the fact that already they are biting and devouring one another instead of growing closer to one another. Our Christianity obliges us not only to die unto sin, but to live unto righteousness; not only to oppose the works of the flesh, but to bring forth the fruits of the Spirit too. Why, to feel himself a dead man. That is, my mind is constantly upon fleshly things. If it should be asked, What course must we take that the better interest may get the better? He's temperant. The law is of a wholly different nature, and hence was ordained of angels in the hand of a mediator. But as for the apostle Paul, he says he was called, and this by his master from heaven; but by his own showing nobody heard the call of Christ but himself. There is no recounting what God had done for them. The particulars he specifies are of various sorts; some are sins against the seventh commandment, such as adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, by which are meant not only the gross acts of these sins, but all such thoughts, and words, and actions, as have a tendency towards the great transgression.
